Restaurants
- Nimmos' Restaurant and Wine Bar
- Located at the Spanish Arch, Galway. Price range is €€€. One of the best places to eat in Galway, old-style decor serving French-style cuisine and a changing menu on a blackboard that is brought to your table. Typical dishes include mussels and mash, country platter (meats and cheese), pork in a herb and pastry crust, and Nimmo's fish soup. Drop in to the wine bar on the ground floor or make a reservation in the upstairs restaurant (both floors serve food).
- Kirwan's Lane Restaurant
- Located in Kirwan's Lane, Galway. Price range is €€€€. Probably Galway's most upmarket restaurant following the demise of the Archway, serves European cuisine and is slightly expensive by Galway standards, but the food is usually very good. Recommended dishes include the duck with apricot and sausage stuffing and their fish cakes.
- Oscar's Restaurant
- Located on Dominick Street, Galway. Price range is €€€. Great range of dishes in a relaxed environment, even the soups can be a meal in themselves. European and American dishes, from pastas to jambalayas - if you're feeling hungry, this will fill you up. Booking advised.
- Moycullen House Restaurant
- http://www.moycullen.com/
- Located just outside Moycullen, Galway. Price range is €€€€. Fine food close to Galway city (Moycullen is about 10 to 15 minutes drive from the Newcastle Road), where you are invited into the parlour to peruse the menu and relax beside the fire before being brought to your table. The waiters with white gloves may seem pretentious, but overall the restaurant is fairly relaxed and nice for a special occasion. Good range of traditional and European dishes.
- KC Blake's Restaurant
- Located on Quay Street, Galway. Price range is €€€. Reliable restaurant serving European and American dishes: pizzas, pasta, meat dishes, burgers, Mexican. Food is good, but the waiters can rush you too much to get ready for the next sitting, so be prepared for that!
- Da Roberta's Restaurant
- Located in Salthill, Galway. Price range is €€€. The most authentic Italian restaurant in the City. Reservations are advisable, but are not always set in stone. A little cramped, but the food is excellent.
- Kashmir Indian Restaurant
- Located off Dominick Street, Galway. Price range is €€€. My favourite Indian, although I hear Tulsi on Augustinian Street is recommended too. I had a conversation with the owner, and when he used to work for DEC, his wife sometimes cooked Indian food for his work colleagues. This proved so popular that the restaurant was the next logical step, and now there are a number of affiliated restaurants in Galway and Clare. Great for takeaways, and a large range of Indian dishes from rogan josh to vindaloo (hot!) to tikka masalas. Recommended dishes include tandoori prawns, chicken bhoona, and the chef's special ginger dish.
- Thai Garden Restaurant
- Located on Spanish Arch, Galway. Price range is €€€. The only all-Thai restaurant in Galway, and luckily it is quite good. Has buffet evenings on Tuesdays and Wednesday I think. Recommended dishes include the pad thai gai (traditional Thai dish with chicken, bean sprouts and turnip) and the flambayeed chicken.
- Royal Villa Chinese Restaurant
- Located opposite Eason on Shop Street, Galway. Price range is €€. One of Galway's most established Chinese restaurants, and has made it into the top 100 restaurants in Ireland on a number of occasions. The Royal Villa has recently expanded its range of food into other Asian types such as Malaysian and Thai. Open for lunch and dinner, and probably the most popular Chinese in Galway.
- The Living Room Bar and Restaurant
- Located on Mainguard Street, Galway. Price range is €€€. New pub that serves good lunch and more recently nice evening meals. The Living Room has friendly staff, a relaxing environment, and serves one of the best all-day breakfasts in the City. Good selection of European beers.
- Milano Restaurant
- Located on Middle Street, Galway. Price range is €€€. Don't let the fact that this is part of the Pizza Express chain put you off, Milano still serve some good pizzas. A limited range of pasta dishes, but some nice desserts and wines as well.
- Home Plate Organics
- Located on Mary Street, Galway. Price range is €€. Originally a student haunt, the Home Plate has gone slightly more upmarket with their organic range of vegetarian dishes and omelettes. It is still a good place for a burger or bolognese.
- Scotty's Restaurants
- Two locations: one on Middle Street, Galway; the second at the Glasan Estate, GMIT, Galway. Price range is €€. Scotty founded his first restaurant on Middle Street after a successful deli operation. Specialising in American food (steak and chicken burgers, Texas fries, melts, baps and subs), Scotty sold this restaurant (which is still open and popular) and after a stint in Disneyland, returned to open a restaurant opposite the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Renmore. If you're in the mood for a good-quality burger in Galway, one of the Scotty's is probably your best bet.
- Malt House Restaurant
- http://www.malt-house.com/
- Located in Buttermilk Lane, Galway. Price range is €€€. Award-winning restaurant located in the heart of Galway, serving local seafood, traditional and modern Irish fare.
- Cooke's Restaurant
- http://www.cookesrestaurantandwinebar.ie/
- Located on Abbeygate Street, Galway. Price range is €€€. "Fine wine and good food" in this central medieval building. Serves both European and Irish cuisine, with many speciality fish dishes.
